Huawei has revealed the final look and color lineup of the Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design, its next-generation tri-fold smartphone set to launch in China on September 7. The device is already available for pre-order locally and will come in three distinctive finishes: Jin Purple, Dark Black and Pure White. Beyond the new colors, Huawei is making a fundamental change to the hardware, replacing the exposed Z-shaped folding system of the Mate XT and Mate XTs with an inward-folding design that keeps the large flexible display protected.
Jin Purple is easily the standout of the three, pairing a textured, almost marble-like purple rear panel with matching metallic accents around the frame and massive camera module. Dark Black takes a more understated approach with a black textured back contrasted by silver details, while Pure White arguably looks the most luxurious, combining its bright rear surface with gold-toned metalwork. Huawei is clearly treating color as part of the Ultimate Design identity rather than simply applying different paint to the same chassis, with each version getting its own combination of contrasting metallic details.
Richard Yu has now shown the finished Mate XT 2 in action, confirming another major change: both outer sections fold inward, while a separate external display handles conventional smartphone use. This should better protect the expensive flexible panel, although it also changes one of the original Mate XT’s most interesting characteristics. Its Z-fold allowed part of the main screen to double as the cover display and enabled intermediate configurations, while the new architecture appears closer to a phone that transforms directly into a large tablet.
Huawei is expected to offer 16GB of RAM with 512GB or 1TB of storage, alongside a premium 2TB version bundled with a stylus. A Privacy Matte Display is also reportedly planned for one of the higher-end configurations, while leaks point to a 6,000mAh battery. Full specifications will arrive on September 7, but Huawei has already made the Mate XT 2’s visual direction clear: a more protected tri-fold architecture wrapped in three finishes designed to make one of the industry’s most unusual smartphones look more like a luxury product than a technology experiment.
