Richard Yu appears to leak Huawei Mate 90 ahead of launch

Huawei may have just given us an unintended first look at one of the Mate 90 models. Richard Yu, Chairman of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, was photographed at Beijing Daxing International Airport holding what appears to be an unreleased Mate 90-series device, even though Huawei has yet to officially tease the lineup.

The images are blurry, but the phone in Yu’s hand appears to feature a large circular camera module and a striking dual-tone rear design. The combination of a dark red camera area with a lighter white or silver lower section has already sparked speculation that this could be the Mate 90 RS Ultimate Design, potentially using a premium two-tone finish rather than the more traditional ceramic look associated with previous RS models.

What makes the sighting more interesting is that Richard Yu has a history of being seen with unreleased Huawei hardware before launch. A similar situation happened with Huawei’s tri-fold Mate XT in 2024, when he was photographed using the device before its official unveiling. That makes this new airport appearance look less like a random prototype sighting and more like another early glimpse at a product close to release.

There are still important unknowns. The photos do not reveal the full camera layout clearly, and Huawei has not confirmed the model name, materials or specifications. The dual-tone design is visible enough to suggest that Huawei may be preparing another visually distinctive Mate flagship, but identifying it specifically as the RS Ultimate Design remains speculation for now.

Current rumors point to a Mate 90-series debut around September 29, although Huawei has not confirmed whether that would take the form of a full launch event or an early Pioneer Program release. If the timing proves accurate, Richard Yu may have just shown the public one of Huawei’s next flagships only days before its official introduction.
