Sony appears ready to launch the Xperia 10 VIII, and leaked promotional material suggests its next mid-range phone isn’t interested in following Android’s obsession with enormous camera modules. Instead, Sony is refining the unusually clean horizontal camera bar introduced by its predecessor, resulting in a phone that looks almost deliberately understated.
The rear design is dominated by a slim, pill-shaped camera island stretching horizontally across the upper section. Two lenses sit neatly inside it, joined by a tiny LED flash and subtle Sony branding. There are no oversized circles, secondary platforms or decorative metal rings competing for attention. In turquoise, white and dark grey, the camera bar blends into the body rather than trying to become the phone’s defining feature. The slightly greenish white finish shown in leaked promotional material also gives the otherwise clinical design a little more personality.
There is something refreshingly Sony about this approach. While Samsung, Xiaomi, Apple and others increasingly use the camera module as a visual billboard, the Xperia 10 VIII looks almost like a piece of minimalist Japanese consumer electronics. Flat sides, softly rounded corners and an uninterrupted rear panel create a utilitarian aesthetic that feels closer to a compact camera or Walkman than a typical 2026 Android handset. Even the SONY logo has been pushed onto the camera bar, leaving most of the back completely free of visual clutter.
That restraint may extend to the hardware. Geekbench suggests Sony is retaining the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 with 8GB of RAM, so this could be more facelift than generational reinvention. The Xperia 10 VII already paired a 50MP main camera and 13MP ultrawide with a compact 6.1-inch display, 5,000mAh battery and a weight of just 168 grams. If Sony preserves those proportions, the Xperia 10 VIII could once again offer something increasingly uncommon: a small, lightweight Android phone whose design doesn’t need an enormous camera bump to announce itself.
